You love your child. And sometimes parenting feels so hard.

Clear Lake Psychotherapy offers Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) to families with children ages 2 to 7 whose behavior at home has gotten bigger than ordinary discipline can handle. Julieta Edmond, MA, LPC, is a certified PCIT Therapist through PCIT International. She provides sessions in English and Spanish, by video, anywhere in Texas.

PCIT is a short-term, evidence-based treatment. You and your child play together while your therapist watches over video and coaches you through an earbud in real time, in the room where the hard moments happen. PCIT asks for a 12 to 16 week commitment, one session per week.

New PCIT clients are scheduled through Clear Lake Psychotherapy's intake team, which handles insurance verification and matches you into Julieta's calendar.

What is PCIT,  in plain language?

PCIT trains the parent, with the child there, in real time.  You get coached while your child is testing you live.

Psychologist Sheila Eyberg designed PCIT to make the parent-child relationship warmer, and make your instructions work. PCIT does both, in that order.

The coaching happens through an earbud or through your phone on speaker. Your child mostly forgets the therapist is there. You hear things like "nice reflection," or "he just handed you the block, describe what he's doing," while you play.

Online Parent Child Interaction Therapy in Texas at Clear Lake Psychotherapy

PCIT is designed for parents of children roughly ages 2 to 7, who are dealing with some version of:

Not following instructions, no matter how many times you repeat yourself
A relationship with your child that has gotten tense, where most of your interactions are corrections
Getting calls from daycare, preschool, or kindergarten
Defiance that has started to feel personal
Tantrums that last far longer or hit harder than other kids' the same age
Hitting, biting, kicking, throwing

What happens in a PCIT session?

Every session follows the same shape, which is part of why it works:

Check in

You report how the week went, including a short standardized behavior questionnaire (usually the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory). Your child's score gets tracked week over week, so progress is a number, not a feeling.

Observation

Your therapist watches you and your child play and codes what she sees, without coaching yet.

Live coaching

This is the core of it. You play with your child and get real-time feedback in your ear.

Wrap-up

You set the practice assignment for the week: 5 minutes a day, same time if possible.

Does PCIT work over video?

Research shows PCIT does work over video.  A randomized trial published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology compared internet-delivered PCIT to clinic-based PCIT for children with disruptive behavior.

Comer et al. (2017) found that most outcomes were comparable across the two formats, that the rate of excellent response at the end of treatment was significantly higher in the internet-delivered group, and that parents in the internet group reported significantly fewer barriers to treatment.

The practical reason for that result is that PCIT is coaching applied to a live parent-child interaction. In a clinic, that interaction happens in a playroom the child has never been in and with unfamiliar toys.  Over video, it happens on your living room floor with the toys your child actually fights you over, and the skills do not have to transfer anywhere afterward. They are already home.

Certified. Bilingual. And she'll meet you where you are.

PCIT is a specific treatment, and who delivers it matters. Here is what parents notice about working with Julieta.

She's certified.
PCIT has two tiers of provider status: therapists who have completed training in the model, and therapists who have completed the full certification through PCIT International, which entails supervised case consultation, competency review, and demonstrated fidelity to the protocol. She is certified, and listed inPCIT International's Provider Directory.
She works in Spanish.
Live, in-session PCIT coaching in Spanish, by video anywhere in Texas. If you or your child are more comfortable in Spanish, tell us when you contact us, and we will schedule you with Julieta from the first call.
She meets you where you are.
Every PCIT session with Julieta is online, which means the skills you learn get practiced in your living room from day one. It also means families in East Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, the Panhandle, and West Texas get access to a certified PCIT provider without a two-hour drive each way.
She can work with ADHD-diagnosed kids.
If your child has an ADHD diagnosis and behavior at home is the part you cannot figure out, that is exactly what PCIT was built for. The parent skills it teaches target the follow-through, transition, and self-regulation problems that make daily life harder for a family with an ADHD kid at this age. PCIT does not treat ADHD itself, and works alongside evaluation, school supports, and any medical care.
